Vegan googly eyes
With Halloween creeping up once again, people are searching for the best ideas to make their food a little bit spooky and to use this time of year as an opportunity to get a bit creative. So today I want to share these homemade googly eyes – an essential recipe to help you bring your vampires, zombies, and monsters to life on Halloween.
Most normal candy eyes are not suitable for vegans because they’re usually made with gelatin, milk chocolate or egg white. They also often have an unclear “gluten-containing” label, making them risky if you’re intolerant to gluten.
However, these homemade googly eyes are completely vegan and gluten-free. They’re so easy to make and only require 3 ingredients!
Whisk together all the ingredients in a mixing bowl until smooth. The mixture should form a thick paste, as in the picture below.
Transfer the sugar paste into a piping bag with a 3mm round hole nozzle.
Pipe 1-1.5cm dots onto a baking tray lined with parchment paper, repeat until all the sugar paste has been used up.
Melt the chocolate chips either by steam over a pan of boiling water or in the microwave.
Transfer the melted chocolate to another piping bag and cut a 1-2mm hole on the tip of the piping bag.
Top a tiny chocolate “pupil” onto each “eyeball”. Continue until all the eyes are completed.
Allow the googly eyes to set for at least 24 hours on the tray. You can leave them in the fridge or at room temperature but the longer they are left to set, the harder they will get.
These 3-ingredient homemade edible googly eyes are so simple to make, perfect for decorating biscuits, cupcakes and more!
