Vegan blueberry chia jam

Why am I making my own jam when you can get a perfectly good jar from a supermarket for a few quid?

Firstly, most of the ready-made jams contain loads of sugar… loads!!!!! I checked a label another day, it’s like 50-70g of sugar per 100g.

Secondly, even though most of the ready-made jams are vegan, you still need to check the label before you purchase. If you see “gelling agents”, that can be suspicious. It can be animal gelatin but can also be plant-based agents like agar agar or seaweed.

Finally, I saw ‘a pound a basket’ of blueberries from the market and I bought 3 bowls… lol… end of story 😆😆😆😆.

Heat the blueberries into a saucepan on medium heat, stirring occasionally.

Once the blueberries have softened and are starting to break down (about 5 minutes), mash them with a fork or potato masher.

Keep stirring and cook for another 5 minutes, the mashed blueberries should completely turn into a thick liquid texture.

Add the maple syrup and chia seeds, turn to heat to low, cover the lid and let it simmer for another 3 minutes. Personally, I don’t have a sweet tooth, so 2 tablespoons maple syrup is perfect for me. If you like your jam sweeter or less sweet, please feel free to adjust the syrup amount.

Turn off the heat and let the chia jam sit for other 15 minutes to cool down and thicken.

Transfer the jam into a jam jar with lid, it can store for up to a week in the refrigerator.

Making your own jam with real ingredients that you know makes you feel great!!!

This chia seed jam only requires 3 ingredients and it is super simple to make – it’s a fool-proof recipe. I love to spread my chia jam on toast with vegan butter or swirled into my yogurt parfait.

Plus… chia seeds also add some extra fibre and some omega-3 to the jam.
