Creamy black sesame latte

I’ve been quite obsessed with sesame since a very young age, but it is not always easy to get a good sesame dish in Europe. In the last few years, sesame (especially black sesame) has started becoming quite trendy in London. I began to see cafes and restaurants making sesame drinks, food and desserts, black sesame lattes are particularly popular in cafes around Hackney. I’ve tried a black sesame latte from each of the different cafes. I must say I was mostly disappointed, they were either fairly watery, too sweet or overpriced. So I decided to make one myself.

I like my latte flavours to be intense, smoky and nutty, so I used only black sesame seeds if you prefer light and sweet… replace 1/2 the black sesame seeds with white ones.

Wash and rinse the rice, combine it with 500ml hot water in a pot. Cook and stir until the water is bubbling, reduce heat to medium-low. Cover and cook for 20 minutes. (Stir regularly to prevent it from sticking to the bottom)

Meanwhile, roast the sesame seeds for 5 minutes (seeds taste far richer after roasting), then set aside and allow to cool for 10 minutes.

Next, you need to grind the roasted sesame seeds into a powder with a food processor. You can set aside a small handful first for serving if you wish.

Add the sesame powder and agave syrup into the rice, cook for another 10 mins and then remove from the heat.

Add the almond milk and blend it until smooth and creamy and then sprinkle with a few sesame seeds to make it look pretty! <3

This sesame latte is delicious served both hot and cold. You can also make the texture slightly thicker for ice-cream or ice lollies. It’s rich, creamy, healthy and 100% vegan-friendly! Enjoy!
